Life story

Life story

Sarah was born in Ferring, Sussex, the daughter of John and Sarah. She was baptised at St Andrew's, Ferring on 28th February 1847. The family worked on a local farm, the eldest boys leaving school at the age of 10 to join their father. In the Spring of 1867, Sarah married John Hutchings, a gamekeeper from the village of Merston near Oving, Sussex. John found work on the Wiston estate and the couple moved into a cottage on the Steyning Road. The couple had no children. By 1881, John and Sarah had moved to Greenham Common in Berkshire where John worked for Lloyd Baxendale Esq, Lord of the Manor of Crookham. Mr Baxendale lived at Greenham Lodge by the Common and John was employed as his gamekeeper. The couple later moved back to Worthing, living in one of the nursery workers cottages in Wallace Lane (Avenue). They shared the cottage with the Hazell family and two lodgers making eleven occupants in all. (Percy Hazell is also buried at Heene). Sarah died on 12th February 1899. No probate.

John moved to Tarring Road, living with a nephew before moving in with his niece and her family in Wallace Lane. He died in East Preston workhouse in 1924 and was buried at Broadwater Cemetery, Worthing.
