Life story

Life story

Sarah Maria Farncombe was born in Bishopstone, Sussex, in 1823 but by the time she appears in a Census, she had married a GP and surgeon, Valentine Walshman Blake in July 1847 in Lewes. Her parents could not be identified.

In 1851 Sarah and her husband were living in Birmingham with three very young sons George Farncombe, 2, Frederick   William,  1, and Henry, 5 months. By 1861, still in Birmingham, two more children had been born daughters, Bertha Emily and Annie Maria and there was a governess in the household.

In 1871 they were still in Birmingham but 1881 finds Sarah and Valentine living with their eldest son, George, now a GP like his father, and his wife, Elizabeth, in Worcestershire. Valentine died in December 1881 and by 1891 Sarah with her daughter, Bertha Emily, was, according to the Census, at 2, Cambridge Road, Broadwater. but that address is curiously similar to that in 1881 ie Cambridge Road, Bishopstone, Worcestershire.

Sarah Maria died on 16 October 1891 and her probate announcement    states her address as 'Omaha', St Michael's Road, Heene, George Farncombe Blake is described in the same document as of Cambridge-road Moseley in the County of Worcestershire. Sarah left a personal estate of £778.
