Life story

Life story

Sarah was the daughter of William H and Jane (nee Rose) Lapthorn. She was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, where her father was a sail maker in Broad Street. In the 1871 Census, Sarah was at the Manor House, Church Street, Martock, Somerset, with her uncle and aunt, George and Mary Jane Taylor. Although aged 22, she does not seem to have had a job. By 1881 she was married. Her husband, John Gabriel Batchelor, was 15 years older than her and had adult children from his first late wife. John and Sarah married at Axminster in Devon in 1876 and had 3 children by 1881 Edith F, Ronald George and Eveline Mary. Their address was Heathcroft, Bexley, Kent but John died on 11 July 1886 at Tenterfield, Mill Road, Worthing, leaving £12, 964 11s 9d. Sarah and Eveline were still living at Tenterfield in 1891 but by 1901 Sarah was again with George and Mary Jane Taylor but now they had moved to Coniston, St Botolph's Road, Worthing. At the time of the 1911 Census, Sarah was living with her son, Ronald George, an automobile engineer, and his wife, Olive, at 1, Binden Road, Ravencourts Park, W, but this may have been s visit for when Sarah died on 27 October 1918, her address was still Coniston, St. Botolph's Road. She left almost £5,000.
