Life story

Life story

Samuel was born in Queenborough, Kent, the son of John and Phoebe. He was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Queenborough on 26th July 1816. His father was a manufacturer of coppers. One of Samuel's first jobs was as a potato salesman. On 31st March 1847, he was granted a licence to marry Mary Carey Hobson as she was underage. She had been born in 1828 and was only 19 when she married Samuel. The marriage took place at St John of Jerusalem Church in South Hackney on 29th April 1847. Mary's father was a wine merchant. Samuel was now working as a secretary for the National Fire and Life Insurance Co.

By 1850, however, he had changed careers and was working as a silhouette artist at 144 Strand in London. His listing in the London Directories lasted until 1855 and then it seems that he went back to his old job of insurance agent. In 1862, Samuel was working for Star Life in Birmingham. Samuel and Mary lived in Yardley, Worcestershire until he retired. The couple moved to Herne Bay where Mary kept a boarding house. By the time of Samuel's death in 1886, they were living in Worthing at 164 Rowlands Road. Again, Mary ran the property as a boarding house. Samuel died about 10th November 1886 and was buried at Heene on 13th November. No probate. Mary died in Worthing in 1907. It is not known where she is buried. Amongst her effects was a piece of work by Samuel.
