Life story

Life story

Samuel was born in Stepney, the son of Joseph and Sarah. He was baptised at St George in the East on 11th December 1835. His father worked as a clerk in a brewery. Samuel trained as a tea dealer eventually becoming a tea broker. On 7th April 1859, he married Elizabeth Ann Batchelor at St Mary's Church, Newington. Elizabeth died the following year aged just 28 and was buried in Norwood Cemetery on 6th February. Samuel built up his tea brokering business and in 1861 was in Hankow, China with his sister Fanny. On 27th April 1867, Samuel married Kate Ann Smith at St Giles Church, Camberwell. Sadly she died in 1870 and was buried in Southwark Cemetery on 4th October. By now Samuel had four children so his sister Fanny moved in to take care of them. In 1873, Samuel married for the third time. His new wife was Ada Alice Clutterbuck. The marriage took place at St Gabriel's Church, Warwick Square, Pimlico on 13th March. On 16th February 1876, Samuel was granted the Freedom of the City of London. His occupation was given as tea broker of 29 Mincing Lane. The family moved to Croydon by 1891 and Samuel's sons Harley and Leslie followed him into the business. In 1909, Samuel, Ada and daughter Alice moved to Worthing, living at "Pendyke" in Belsize Road. Samuel's sister Fanny died there in 1914. Samuel died on 28th July 1916. Probate was granted on 24th August 1916 to John Kenelin Stenning tea broker and Ada Alice Cheshire widow. Effects £10747 18s 3d.
