Life story

Samuel Husbands Beckles 1852 -1905 M.D. of Flour Mill

Samuel Husbands Beckles was born in Marylebone, London, on 27th May 1852. He was the son of the Reverend Edward Hyndman, 36yrs, Lord Bishop of Barbados, and Margaret Simpson, 37yrs, nee Walcott. He was I of 8 children, all born in the West Indies apart from Samuel.

In 1871, aged 18yrs, Samuel was employed as a clerk, and was a lodger living in Marylebone.

On 7th October 1880 Samuel married Caroline Jane Terry, at St. Mary, Willesden, they had 3 children, Olive Cecilia, b.1881, Leslie Edward. B.1886, and Evelyn Lina, b.1888.

In October 1888 Caroline Jane Beckles filed a petition for a judicial separation from her husband, Samuel, on account of his adultery, but in June 1889 the petition was dismissed as the couple had agreed to live apart. In 1891 Samuel was residing at the home of his parents in Hastings, Sussex. They later appeared to have reconciled as in the 1901 census they were again living together.    Samuel and his family had moved to Staverton, Devon where, in 1901, he was managing director of a Flour Mill company, 4 years later he died on 12th October 1905, in Brighton, aged 53yrs, but his address for probate was 2, Steyne Gardens, Worthing. Administration was granted to his widow, Caroline Jane, effects, £1746 16s. 0d. Value 2024 -£266,000.
