Rose Augusta Frances Hancock nee Smith 1854 - 1906
London born, Rose married the Reverend Henry Hancock at the age of 43 after living in the family home in Hemel Hempstead. Her father was a wealthy farmer and her mother, Mary Ann, was from Bloomsbury. She had no children.
Biography
Rose Augusta Frances was born in 1854 in Bayswater, the youngest of 5 siblings, to Hugh Smith a Hertfordshire farmer and his wife Mary Ann. The family had a butler, a cook, a nurse and two housemaids. The family lived in Oxfordshire for some time before residing in London, where Hugh was a stockbroker and fundholder. Rose did not have a job during this time. In 1887, Rose inherited £4000 from her brother Graham and by1891 she was living in Hemel Hempstead with her father, mother and sister Louisa and 3 servants.
On 14th October 1897 at St. Martin's Church, Marylebone, Rose married Henry Charles Hancock, a clerk in holy orders in the presence of her sister, Louisa. The couple moved to Holland Lodge, in Worthing, shortly before her husband's death in 1905. Widowed, Rose died on the 11th April, 1906 at Holland Lodge, St. Botolph's Road, Worthing and left an estate of nearly £9000.
