Life story

Life story

Robert was born in Partick, Lanarkshire, the son of William and Margaret and lived most of his life in the town. His father died on 21st August 1840. Robert studied to be a pharmaceutical chemist and worked mainly in Glasgow. He lived with his mother until her death on 5th August 1872. On 9th September 1875, Robert married Margaret Napier in Govan. Their son William Buchanan Rait was born in 1879 but died in August aged 3 months. A second son James Napier Rait was born on 25th April 1881.  Margaret died on 27th November 1896. By 1901, Robert had retired and lived with his son in Partick. James married a few years later and moved to Worthing, living at Norwich House in Grand Avenue. The house was opposite the Hotel Metropole which was being built. Robert died on a visit to his son on 10th October 1906. Probate was granted in Scotland on 13th February 1907 to Robert Napier, William Rait, James Brock Rait and James McLaurin. Will dated 15th April 1897. Probate was granted in London on 26th February 1907. Effects £943 18s 6d.
