Robert Henry Mills was born in Worthing on 26th November 1885. His father was George Jonathan Mills, a wealthy land and property developer, aged 65yrs; his mother was Georgiana nee Riches, aged 37yrs. He had 4 older siblings, Georgiana 10, William 9, Jean 5 and James 4; he had an older half-brother, George J. Mills, 41yrs. The family lived at 33, Gratwicke Road, Worthing.
Robert studied as a Chartered Surveyor and in 1908 aged 23yrs, he was awarded a gold medal for his exam result at the Surveyors’ Institute’s annual meeting. Later in his life he endowed an annual prize to the Institute for the student with the highest overall % in their final exams.
In 1909 he married Hannah Parr, 25yrs, at Christchurch, Lancaster Gate, London, his occupation was Land Agent. They had 3 daughters, Margaret 1912, Mary 1913 and Joan 1916, they lived at 179, Maida Vale, London.
In 1910 Robert was admitted as a Freeman of the City of London by Patrimony. (His father had been admitted in 1858 in the Company of Fishmongers).
In 1939 Robert and Hannah were living at 16, Dorchester Mews, Paddington, with adult daughters, Margaret and Mary. Robert was registered as Proprietor of Nursing Home/ Chartered Surveyor. The nursing home was almost certainly the family home at 62, Gratwicke Road, Worthing, which was being used as a convalescent home, run by his widowed sister, Georgiana Tanner, matron.
Hannah died aged 62yrs, 1947.
In 1959, aged 74yrs, Robert Henry Mills married Florence Cooper, 69yrs, at Marylebone.
Robert Henry Mills died on 10th January 1963, aged 77yrs.
His address for probate was 12a, Neville Court, Abbey Road, N.W.8 Effects £64340 3s 10d – value 2020 – £1.3m.
His widow, Florence Mills, died on 3rd November 1965, her address was 61, St. John’s Wood Court, N.W.8, she was buried at Heene Cemetery on 19th November 1965. Effects £62155 – value 2020 – £1.2m.
