Life story

Life story

Robert was born in Lewes, Sussex the son of Robert and Mary nee Hobden. He lived and worked in Sussex all his life variously in Berwick, Westmeston, Lindfield and Wivelsfield before moving to Worthing. He worked as a gardener. In 1869, Robert married Sarah Noakes in Ruckinge, Kent. The couple had four children. When the family moved to Westmeston, Robert worked for Rev. Canon Campion. In September 1888, the Reverend was fatally injured after his horse threw him. Robert gave evidence at the inquest which returned a verdict of "accidental death". Sarah died in 1899 and was buried in Lindfield. Robert moved to Wivelsfield with his daughter Mary Ann acting as his housekeeper. By 1911, the family were living in Cobden Road, Worthing. Mary Ann had married John Parvin, a cab proprietor. The Parvin family had taken in a lodger, Annie Marie Lloyd who worked as a domestic cook. She and Robert married and by 1921 were living in Boundary Road. Robert was still working as a jobbing gardener at the age of 73 and was featured in the local Worthing Gazette as one of Worthing's "Grand Old Men" in 1923. He died at his home 13 Belsize Place, Worthing in September 1931 at the age of 83. No probate.
