Life story

Robert Jeffry Donohue was born in Kingston, Dublin, Ireland in 1824, he was the son of James Donohue, of the Inland Revenue Dept.

In 1859, September quarter, Robert married Ellen Maria Barker, in Islington, she was born in Suffolk, in 1836. They had a daughter, Nora Ellen, in 1869, and Robert's wife died in Ireland, in 1874.

In the 1861 census, Robert listed his occupation as Division Officer Ireland Regiment. In 1871, he was recorded as a member of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons of Ireland.

In 1885 Robert married Amelia Helbert at St. George's, Hanover Square, in 1901, Amelia was resident in the Queen's Hotel, Eastbourne, with a lady's maid.

Robert died, aged 79yrs, on 2nd December 1903 at Cecil House, Richmond Road, Worthing, probate was granted to William Fry, jnr. and Thomas Henry Robert Craig, solicitors.            Effects £25,993 16s 10d. Value 2024 - £3.9m.

Irish Independent, Dublin. 5th February 1904.

Mr. Robert Jeffry Donohue, of Cecil House, Richmond Road, Worthing, formerly of 169, Queen’s Gate, Kensington, and of 5, Adelaide Street, Kingstown, Dublin, who died on the 2nd December last, aged 79yrs, left personal estate of the value of £25,993 16s 10d. including £9079 9s 9d. in England. He bequeathed £100 to his sister-in-law, Mrs. Annie Willson Donohue, and £300 to his nephew, Robert Francis Plowman Donohue.  He left his residuary estate upon trust to pay £300 a year for five years after his death to his daughter, Nora Ellen, should she so long remain unmarried, and £5,000 a year for a further ten years should she still remain a spinster, the surplus income to accumulate, and upon marriage the whole of the income is to be paid to her. He left the ultimate upon trust for her issue, but failing issue, then upon trust for his said nephew, Robert Francis Donohue.
