Life story

Life story

Robert was born in the village of Milland near Trotton close to the Sussex border with Hampshire. He was the son of William and Susannah. By 1851. the family had moved to Chithurst, close to Petersfield. As a young man, Robert worked in a school in Havant, Hampshire before becoming an indentured apprentice in the Merchant Navy in 1868. He signed on in November and was bound to H W Paine of Littlehampton. His first ship was the "Garibaldi". Although he only signed on for two years, by 1876 he was still with the Merchant Navy, working on the "Macgregor". Robert was discharged on 30th August 1876, collecting his pay of £36 2s 11d. In the Summer of 1877, Robert married Elizabeth Cooper. She came from the village of Egdean in Sussex. The couple settled in Lyminster near Littlehampton where Robert worked as a labourer. They had three children, Albert, Lily and Ernest. By 1891, Robert had moved the family to the village of Weeke near Winchester where he found work as a groom and gardener. By 1901, the family were in Worthing, living in Elm Grove in West Worthing. Robert was working as a jobbing gardener. Robert died on 19th February 1931 at 63 The Drive, Worthing. No probate.

Elizabeth died at her daughter's home in Broomfield Avenue, Worthing in 1940 and was buried beside Robert.
