Life story

Life story

Richard Carver was born in Sutton, Sussex, in 1833; he was the son of Charles Carver, 43yrs, an agricultural labourer, and Hannah, 45yrs, nee Mercer. Richard was 1 of 7 children, 2 boys and 5 girls. His father's occupation required the family to move from farm to farm and Richard lived in Sutton, and Coldwaltham, and then Petworth when he was 17yrs and working as a farm carter.

On 25th February 1867 Richard married Ellen Jane Penfold, 20yrs, at Broadwater, Worthing, and they had 5 children over the following 16 years. Richard continued working as a farm labourer/carter in Fittleworth and Poling, Sussex, until his 60s when he moved to Worthing with Ellen and his 18yr old daughter, Lucy Agnes, where he worked as a market gardener's labourer.

By 1911, Richard was a pensioner, his daughter, Lucy, was married with 3 children, and they all lived in Lavington Terrace, Worthing, where Richard died, aged 82yrs, in January 1915.
