Life story

Life story

Richard John Bunney, born in January 1848 in Polmassick, St Ewe, Cornwall, seemed to be known as Richard sometimes and John at others. Mostly, he was John in the 1861, 1871, 1901 and 1911 Censuses but  Richard in the 1851, 1881, and 1891 Censuses. His father, John , was an agricultural labourer, and his mother was Emily, nee Andrew. Richard John was the second of at least eleven children. He himself became an agricultural labourer. He married twice. His first wife was Mary Jane Liddicoat whom he wed at St Austell, Cornwall, in 1872. They had 3 children Richard J, Thomas and Florence.  Mary  died in 1893 and in September 1896 Richard John married Fanny Barnwell also in St Austell. They had no children. Richard John seemed to want his children to have as good  an education as possible and even 4 year old Florence was a scholar. She became a dressmaker while her older brothers, Richard and Thomas , became an ironmonger and  a stonemason, respectively.  Richard John lived in Cornwall for most of his life but by 1901 he and Fanny had moved to 22, Milton Street, Heene, Worthing, where they stayed for the rest of their lives. When Richard John died on 14 June 1926 he left the sum of £633 14s 5d ( equal to about £26,000 today) to be administered by Alfred Sidney Bevens, a police constable and husband of his daughter, Florence.
