Life story

Life story

Rhoda was born in Putney, the daughter of William and Mary. She was baptised at St Mary's church, Putney on 16th May 1856. Her father worked for the London and South West Railway as a platelayer, eventually becoming a foreman. Rhoda spent all her working life in service mainly with one family from the 1880's. On 21st April 1881, her father was knocked down and killed by a train close to Barnes Station. His body was taken back to his house which was only a few yards from the scene of the accident (see report in The Globe 21st April 1881). By this time, Rhoda was working for the Aron family in Croydon, Surrey. George Aron was originally from France and worked as a private tutor. His wife had died shortly after giving birth to a son and George needed someone to look after his daughter Mary Georgina. Tragically, George had also lost a son soon after his wife's death, possibly through cot death. Rhoda worked as the family's housekeeper and after George's death in 1892, she became Mary's companion. By 1911, the women had moved to Worthing, living at "Crohamhurst " in Heene Road. Mary died on 30th June 1919 and was buried at Heene. Rhoda inherited the house and continued to live there with Rose Austin, a maid who became her companion. Rhoda died on 4th October 1945 at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester. She was buried beside Mary Aron. Probate was granted on 5th October to Robert Wallington Hale green solicitor. Effects £591 5s 5d.
