Life story

Rebecca Jane Hendry was born in Little Fransham, Norfolk, she was baptised there on 10th March 1850. Her parents were William Hendry, 46yrs, a farmer and bailiff, her mother, Hannah, 39yrs. She had 4 older siblings, Hannah, 15yrs, Harriett, 13yrs, William, 11yrs, and James, 3yrs. 

On 24th July 1877, Rebecca, 27yrs, married the Rev. John Swaffield Orton, 40yrs, Rector of the Parish Church, Beeston, Norfolk. They had 2 children, John Swaffield Orton, September 1886, and daughter, Ellery Swaffield Orton, July 1889. 

After 1891, John, Rebecca, and their two young children, moved to Worthing, Sussex, where they lived at a property they named Beeston, in Wordsworth Road; on 24th February 1895, Rebecca was widowed when John died, aged 57yrs.  

Rebecca continued to live in Worthing with her daughter, Ellery, and on 20th January 1922, she died, aged 71yrs. Probate was granted to Charles William Previte Orton, Esquire, and John White, Solicitor. Effects £9054 5s. Value 2021 - £527K.

The Last Will and Testament for Rebecca Jane Orton was dated 9th March 1921.
