Life story

Life story

Rebecca was one of a pair of Irish sisters who came to England just before World War II. She was the daughter of Robert and Charlotte Kennedy and the older sister of Charlotte Elizabeth. Rebecca was born in Kilcullen, Co Kildare, Ireland where her father worked as a sergeant with the Royal Irish Constabulary. There are no Irish census records before 1901 as they were destroyed in a fire. Rebecca's mother Charlotte died in 1897 and by 1901, the family were living in Dublin. Robert died in 1902. Rebecca never married and worked as a draper's assistant. Due to the uprising in Ireland, there was no census taken in 1921 so it is not known when Rebecca and Charlotte came to Worthing before the War. Both sisters were living in Belsize Road, Worthing when the register was taken in September 1939. Rebecca died at 19 Belsize Road on 24th February 1942. Probate was granted on 8th June to Barclays Bank Ltd. Effects £8460 3s 11d. Re-sworn £8518 16s 9d.

Note: The Irish census was taken in 1926, so Rebecca's record can be updated later.
