Life story

Life story

Ralph was born in Worthing, the son of George and Sarah. He was baptised at Broadwater Church on 7th February 1841. Ralph was one of eight children and lived with his family in the town, firstly in Field Row and then in Chapel Street (later called Portland Road). His father was a fly proprietor (a one horse, two wheeled carriage for hire) and Ralph followed George into the business. On 24th December 1866, Ralph married Elizabeth (Betsy) Peters at Broadwater Church. The couple lived in Portland Road, later moving to Heene Mews. They had six children. Ralph was a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters and when he died in 1897, they sent representatives to his funeral. Ralph died on 11th August 1897. Probate was granted on 2nd December to Elizabeth Teesdale widow. Effects £371 14s.

“Forester’s Funeral”

Mr Ralph Teesdale, a well-known and respected fly proprietor and driver, died at his residence Heene Mews on Wednesday at the age of fifty-six. Deceased was for many years a member of Court Pride of Worthing, Ancient Order of Foresters, and at the funeral, which took place at Heene Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, the following representatives of the Court attended: Alderman F C Linfield, Trustee; Bro. G Madgwick, PCR; Bro. W Constable, PCR; Bro. C Cooper, PCR; Bro. A Pratley, PCR; and Bros. G Scutt, M Mitchell and Saunders. The Forester’s service was read at the graveside by Bro. Pratley.
