Percy Ashwell was born on 25th May 1889 in St. Helier, Jersey C.I., he was baptised on 15th June. His father was Albert (Berto) Henry Ashwell, 33yrs, Clergyman, and his mother, Eliza Blow, nee Glover, 32yrs. Percy had 3 older siblings, Olive 4, Kathleen 2, and Albert 1.
Percy attended Eastfield House, Preparatory School, in Ditchling, Sussex. In 1900 his brother, Albert, died, aged 12yrs, and in 1902, his sister, Kathleen, died, aged 16yrs.
Percy was living in Stoke-on-Trent in 1911, aged 21yrs, he was an Apprentice Engineer, Staffordshire was his father's birthplace.
When his mother, Eliza Blow Ashwell, died in 1930, at Salisbury House, Salisbury Rd. Worthing, she left her estate of £6291 3s 2d -value 2020 - £413K. to Percy, by then working as a Market Grower, and his sister, Olive. In the Kelly's Directory of 1930 Percy Ashwell was listed as Nurseryman, Ashacre Nurseries, Ashacre Lane, Worthing.
Percy and Olive were both living at 54, Richmond Road, Worthing when the 1939 Register was taken. They were both listed as Single and Percy Ashwell, 50yrs, as a Market Gardener.
Percy Ashwell died, aged 69yrs, on 11th April 1959, Brighton, Sussex. His Will was reported in the Worthing Herald, 14th August 1959, describing him as a retired fruit grower, he left estate of £11,815, value 2020 - £276K. Among bequests he left £25 to the Distressed Gentlefolks Aid Society.
