Life story

Maud Alice Mann was born to Parents James Ayton Mann from Peckham, Surrey and Eugenie Rose Sophie Robinson from Lucknow India. Maud was the third of five children born to the family. Pauline Marie Annie 1881, Louise Ayton 1882, Maud Alice was third born in 1884, Son John Ayton in 1885 and finally daughter Constance Ann 1886. Constance Ann dies the following year 1887 aged 1. Maud's Grandfather was James Mann and he married Maria Louisa Isdell (grandmother). Maria's sister Sophia Isdell married Col William Thomas Robinson. Sophia and William adopted Eugenie (Maud's mother) from India and raised her as their child. This is how she has come to meet John Ayton Mann and marry him in 1881. When Maud was 4 years old her father dies leaving her mother to raise four children. Her mother continues to raise the family on her own means until she dies in 1902. Sister Louisa marries in 1905, Sister Pauline and Brother John both marry in 1908. Maud remains single and by 1911 is living in Worthing in a boarding house living on her own means. Maud dies in Worthing in 1921.

'- Living at 84 Devonshire Road Islington. Father James Ayton was 37 and a commercial Clerk. Mother Eugenie Rose was 23 and Daughter Pauline was 3 weeks old on the Census. The family were lodging at the address and one other family were living at No 84 at that time.

1891 census: 

Maud is living with her mother Eugenie Rose Sophia 33 Widow living on her own means, and her 3 siblings Pauline 10, Louisa 8, Maud is 7 and John is 5, in Walton Le Soken, Essex

1901 census: 

No Census records found for Maud, mother or sister Louisa. Brother John is in Christs Hospital boarding school London. Sister Pauline is visiting her Aunt in Chislehurst Governess Benevolent Institution.

1911 census: 

Maud is now living in a boarding House at 92 Marine Parade, on Worthing seafront. This is run by Mrs Mary Elizabeth Drage and there are 10 boarding rooms in the house. Maud is living on her own means.

Siblings of Maude

Sister Pauline Marie Annie Married Captain Frank R Willis RN , and dies in Somerset 1960.

Sister Louisa Ayton Married Walter Haward, a medical student when she met him. Husband Walter goes on to become the Director General of the Ministry medical services and gains an O.B.E.

Louisa becomes Lady Louisa Haward and dies in 1968 in Bath, Somerset.

Brother John Ayton marries Priscilla Brine and starts working as an Agent for a metal Merchants, and then owns his own business Mann J Ayton and Co Ltd. He registers for short service in the British Army in 1914. John dies in 1957 24th Feb in Essex
