Life story

Life story

Mary was born in Worthing, the daughter of Henry and Mary Goodger and the sister of Henry (also buried at Heene). Their surname has also been spelt as "Goodyer" in some records.

Mary was baptised at Broadwater church on 29th October 1809. By 1841, she was working as a servant in Ferring. Like a lot of girls looking for work, she moved to London where she met John Young, a blacksmith with the Royal Artillery at Woolwich. They married at St Mary Magdalene Church, Woolwich on 5th July 1847. The regiment was in Ireland in 1861 and there is a record of a John Young being court martialled on 4th January.

By 1871, the couple were back in Worthing living in Tarring where John worked as a blacksmith and labourer. John died in 1885 and was buried at West Tarring on 27th February. Mary died in early 1888 and was buried at Heene on 5th January. No probate.
