Life story

Life story

Mary was born in Worthing, the daughter of Henry Goodger and his first wife Ellen. She was baptised at Broadwater church on 1st August 1858. Mary's mother died the following year and Henry married Mary Lawrence in 1860. The family lived in Washington village for a short while before moving to Heene Terrace in Worthing. Mary worked as a dressmaker and by the 1870's, was living in London with her uncle's family. On 7th July 1879, Mary gave birth to a daughter Annie Amelia. She married widower Edward Willshere at St James the Less church, Bethnal Green on 23rd July 1882. Mary's sister Lucy was a witness. Edward was a millwright working for local brewers. A second daughter Inez Ellen was born on 5th May 1883. Both girls were baptised at St Peter's church, Mile End in 1895. By then, the family had moved to Mile End Old Town, living in Argyle Road. Mary died on 3rd December 1912 and was buried at Heene on 7th December. No probate.

Edward married Mary's sister Faith Minnie in 1914. After her death, he married for the fourth time and moved to Surrey. Annie Amelia died in Worthing in 1953. Inez became Mrs Sidney Mann and died in 1974.
