Life story

Life story

Mary Lewin Razzell was born in Horley, Surrey, she was baptised on 25th August 1867. Her parents were William Lewin Razzell, 25yrs, a Gardener, and Mary Ann, 26yrs, nee Call. Mary was the first-born child but was raised in the home of her aunt, Ann Pullen, a lodging house keeper, in Dorking. Her parents went on to have a further eleven children.

Mary continued to live with her aunt in Dorking, and she earned her living as a dressmaker. When she was 26yrs old, in 1893, she married William James Hutton, 26yrs, a carpenter, on 11th April at St. Paul's, Dorking. Less than six weeks later, her husband died, he was buried on 20th May 1893. Mary returned to her former home where her aunt died in 1894 and she lived there with her cousin, Elizabeth Call, continuing her occupation as dressmaker.

In 1902, aged 34yrs, Mary Lewin Hutton, widow, married Walter Wilkins, also 34yrs, a widower, with 3 children; the marriage took place in Leatherhead. Walter was a stationer and newsagent with a business in Station Road, Horley, Surrey, where they lived and had 2 daughters, Kathleen Eva, 1904, and Francis Mary, 1906.

By 1911, Mary was working as an assistant in the newsagents, as was her stepdaughter, Alice Helena, 22yrs. When Walter retired in 1919, they moved to Worthing, living in Crescent Road, before moving to Browncotts, Mill Road, where Mary died on 26th August 1931, aged 64yrs. Administration was granted to Walter Wilkins, gentleman, effects £64. Value 2021 - £4,000.
