Life story

Life story

Mary was the daughter of George and Mary Truefitt, and was born in Islington. George was an Architect, born London. Mother Mary, nee Haywood, was born in Worcestershire. In 1861 the family was living in Middleton Road, Islington. George and Mary, with their 3 young children, George, Mary and Lewis, plus a Nursemaid and a House Servant. By 1871 the family had moved to Bartholomew Road, Fernbank, still in Islington. They now had a Housemaid and a Cook.

(Mother Mary died in 1896 and was buried in Heene, and Mary Louisa and her brothers gained half-sister Connie, as George married 26-year-old Constance Lever within three months.)

In 1883, George Anthony Warleigh married Mary Louisa Truefitt in Islington. He was then a Lieutenant in the Navy. In 1861 George A was a Boarder at a school in Millbrook Hampshire (as were brothers Theodore and Frederick). He gained his Masters Certificate of Training in 1872, after 7 years Service.

(George's father Henry Smith was born in Chard, in Somerset. He assumed the name Warleigh in the mid 1850s, when he was at Parkhurst. He was a campaigner as a Prison Chaplain, publishing books and tracts.)

At the time of the 1891 census, George Anthony was a Lieutenant on the Royal Naval Ship, Black Prince. Wife Mary was living with her parents, in Shelsby Lodge in Western Place, Worthing. Father George designed St George's Church in 1867, one of his many designs.

In 1901 George Warleigh was a Visitor at a Boarding House in Llandrindod Wells, described as a Commander, R.N. Retired. He died in 1909.

At the same time, Mary was a Visitor in Stretton Sugwash in Herefordshire, in the household of John Yeomans, a Farmer, his wife Mary and family. Plus their four House Servants. (They were relatives, John's wife, Mary Rebecca, was a Haywood by birth.)

It would seem that Mary and George had been living apart for some years.

Father George Truefitt died in 1902, and was buried in Heene Cemetery.

By1911, Mary was at the Moorings, Mill Road, where she would spend the rest of her life. She was living on a Naval Pension, with her cousin Jane Elizabeth Yeomans, a 17-year-old Student from Hereford, plus a Cook, 34-year-old Louisa Ridwood Belton, from Worthing, and a Housemaid from Petworth.

By 1921, still at the Moorings, Mary was living with two Servants 23-year-old Edith Mabel Daughtrey, aged 23, born in Goring, and Louisa Belton.

In Kelly's Directory for 1930, Mary, a Private Resident of West Worthing, was living at 13 Mill Road. Presumably the Moorings had been numbered.

When she died, Probate was given to Jane Elizabeth and Rebe Honor Sarah Yeomans, both described as Spinsters.

Henry Haywood, of Somerset, officiated at Mary's funeral.
