Life story

Life story

Mary was born in Preston, the daughter of George and Ellen Heathcote. George was a librarian and he and Ellen had seven children. The family lived in a lane called Main Spirit Wiend. The name relates to cock fighting. By 1861, George had moved the family to Fishergate Hill and was now a postman. In 1868, Mary married William Turner Dunn at Kirkham. The couple moved to Manchester where William was an agent for a sewing machine manufacturer. They had two children and to supplement their income, took in a couple of lodgers. In 1872, William was arrested for theft of silk and wool from his employer. He was caught trying to sell the items in a pub. After a spell in prison, he left Mary Jane and took to the road. Newspaper reports during the 1880's tell of William begging in Norfolk, Portsmouth and London. Between 1894 and 1896, he was in and out of the Workhouse hospitals either drunk or suffering from pleurisy. He disappeared from the records about 1896. Mary Jane moved to Lytham and then to London with her daughter Minnie. In 1891, Mary Jane was living with Minnie and her son in law George Culver in Islington. By 1901 Mary Jane had changed her name to Vaughan and is described as a widow in the census. No marriage seems to have taken place and no trace of a husband. In 1911, Mary Jane, her daughter Minnie and grandchildren were living in Eton Road. Mary died there in 1926. She left no will.
