Life story

Mary was born Mary Elizabeth Mantle and one of three children born to Father Henry Mantle of Halstead Kent and Mother Elizabeth Lead of Stafford, Staffordshire. Her parents married at St Mary's in Lambeth, London 0n June 6, 1868. In 1871 Son Edward John was born in Hornchurch Essex, 1874 Daughter Emma Julia was born in Blackheath Kent, then in 1876 in Bromley Kent Mary Elizabeth was born. The family lived in Greenwich, Newington and Camberwell. Her father was a Gardener. Mary was working as a Baby Linen machinist. While living in Springfield Street in Camberwell, Mary's future husband is boarding with their family and his occupation is a Stoker Petty Officer in the Royal Navy. As a boarder he received his accommodation with all meals included, where a lodger does not have food included. Mary and George were married in Camberwell, London by the end of the year in 1911. Mary and George did not have any children and in 1918 George retired from the navy in March and were living at 37 Arundel Road in Littlehampton. In December of that year Mary had an operation for a malignant tumour of the ovary and died 42 hours later of Shock at Seabrook Nursing Home in Queens Road Worthing on 15th December. Mary Elizabeth Steward was laid to rest at Heene Cemetery 3 days later, on the 18th December. George had moved back to Deptford and in 1939 was lodging with a family there. George died in Greenwich in 1954 aged 80
