Life story

Life story

Mary was born in Rugby, Warwickshire, the daughter of John Shaw Sale and his wife Mary Ann. Her father was a writing master at Rugby School until his death in 1869. Mary was baptised at St Andrew's church, Rugby on 5th July 1826. Mary grew up in Rugby and as a young woman worked at Rugby School. She spent her life with her family, looking after her father when he was widowed in 1861 and after his death, moving in with her sister Martha and her husband Edmund Grove. The family lived in Saltburn, North Yorkshire for a while where Edmund had an iron foundry business. In the early 1880's, the family moved to Worthing, living at "Seabank" in Manor Road. Martha died shortly after the move in 1888 and was buried in Heene Cemetery. Edmund, Mary and Edmund's son Walter, also a widower, moved to Preston Village near Brighton. Edmund died in 1911 and was buried beside Martha at Heene.  Mary continued to live in Harrington Road, Preston Village until her death in 1912. She was buried at Heene. Probate was granted on 28th June to Gertrude Campbell Philp spinster and Edward Ernest Winterbotham solicitor. Effects £3433 18s 8d.
