Story

Mary Jane Eccleston was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, on 25th November 1852*; she was baptised at the Shrewsbury Circuit Methodist Chapel on 24th December 1852. Her parents were Edward Eccleston, 36yrs, wheelwright, and Mary, 37yrs, nee Bowdler; she was 1 of 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls.

Mary Jane lived with her family in Shewsbury; in the 1881 census she was the last sibling still at home and was described as ‘invalided’. By 1891 her father had died, and Mary Jane lived with her widowed mother and sister, Eliza, she was now described as ‘consumptive’.

In 1902, aged 49yrs, Mary Jane married William Powell, 50yrs, a retired draper, at Atcham, Shropshire. In 1898, at the age of 26yrs, William had spent time as a patient at the Virginia Water Asylum, Surrey.

By 1911 they had moved to Worthing, living at Haughmond, West Avenue.

On 14th October 1920, William was admitted to Graylingwell Hospital, the West Sussex County Asylum, Chichester, as a private patient, suffering from melancholia, he died there on 2nd February 1928, aged 75yrs, leaving estate of £1.3m.

Mary Jane continued to live in Worthing, at some point she moved to 141, Brighton Road, where she died on 15th December 1934, aged 82yrs. Probate was granted to Kate Shersby & George Shersby, solicitor, effects £9020 11s 10d. Value 2022 – £717,000.

*Mary Jane’s birthdate on the gravestone 22.02.1849 does not agree with GRO Records.
