Life story

Life story

Mary Ann was born in Lambeth, Surrey, the daughter of John and Elizabeth. She was baptised at Holy Trinity church, Lambeth on 9th February 1851. Her father was a clock and watchmaker. In 1866, Mary Ann's mother died and the following year, John Myers married Marianne Frederica Wilson, a widow. She was known as Minnie. On 25th August 1875, Mary Ann married Charles Oatts, a Scottish publisher and stationer. The couple set up home in Glasgow, where Charles had his business. They had three children but only two survived to adulthood. Ella Mary was born in 1880 and Francis John in 1891. For details on Charles' business interests, see his page. By 1901, the family moved south to Wallington in Surrey and then later to Worthing. By 1921, the family were living in Richmond Road, Worthing. Mary Ann died here on 13th April 1927. Probate was granted on 27th May to Charles Oatts and John Joseph Myers Esquires. Effects £1601 5s 7d. Charles died on 22nd May 1935 and was buried with Mary Ann at Heene.
