Life story

Life story

Mary Eliza Nott (nee Haynes) was born in 1858 in London, to James Reading and Mary Hannah Haynes (nee Marshall), she was one of 6 children born to James and Mary.  In 1861 James was working as an Artificial Flower Maker and living and working at 74a New Bond Street, Hanover Square, Middlesex. By 1871 James and his family had moved to Margaret Street in Brighton Sussex, and he is now working as a Heraldic Painter.

49 Market Street, Brighton

By 1881 the family have moved to 49 Market Street, Brighton, where they lived and worked for the rest of James's life.   James is now described as a  Die Stamper and Illuminator, which could relate to his Heraldic Painting Work in 1871.  Die Stamps were created as an engraved metal die which worked well for crests, coats of arms and letter seals. Illuminating heraldry was an art of creating manuscripts that depict coats of arms and other heraldic images. His Son James W is also working with his Father. By 1921 James has retired but his Son James and his Daughter Nellie Louise are keeping the family business going, and they are now described as Relief Stampers on Note Paper, all still living and working at 49 Market Street.

Mary Eliza Haynes married Charles Augustus Nott on 13th December 1881 at The Holy Trinity Church, Bournemouth.  Charles Augustus Nott was born on 24th October 1851 in Nice France, to Rev. William George Nott and Adela Elizabeth (nee Farrer). Charles's Father William was a Reverend at Sutterton Lincs.  By 1891 the couple are living at 21 Fernlea Road Streatham Wandsworth London. They have 2 children Ralph Augustus born 1884 Brighton, Sussex, Eliza Adela born 1885 Brighton Sussex.   In 1901 the family have moved to 17 Victoria Road Portsmouth Hants where Charles is working as a Timber Merchant.   In 1911 the children have left home and Charles and Mary have moved to Sheira North Street Worthing Sussex

Charles died on 29th August 1920 at Beulah Cowper Road Worthing Sussex and left £10666 8s 4d (£310,000 in 2020) to his Wife Mary Eliza

Mary Eliza must have moved back to 49 Market Street, Brighton before her death, but she died on 29th May 1929 while staying with her Daughter Elsie Adela at 2 West Avenue Bellingham-on-Tees, County Durham. She left a sum of £20650 1s 11d (£945,000 in 2020) with probate to Ralph Augustus Nott and Elsie Adela Mary Booth (children)
