Life story

Life story

Mary was the daughter of George Burnell, a proprietor of houses and a fundholder and Sarah nee Sharpe. A fundholder was one who received dividends from his investments. Mary was baptised on 30th July 1854 at East Hoathly and was one of a large family. She was 19 when she married Rev. Arthur Meyrick on 7th January 1874 and the ceremony was conducted by Arthur's father Rev. Edwin Meyrick at Bulford, Wiltshire. Arthur was a schoolmaster with his own school Wyndersham House in Church Street, Amesbury, Wiltshire. His staff consisted of an assistant tutor and two female governesses who cared for 18 boys between the ages of 7 and 14. The house was built in 1848 and replaced four 18th century tenements. It was a substantial five-bayed building with a central staircase in the hall and large rooms. Mary died on 23rd November 1922. Her address at the time was 94 Rowlands Road, Worthing. No probate found.
