Life story

Life story

Mary Louisa Carter was born in Kennington, Kent, she was baptised on 17th December 1839; she was the daughter of Lieutenant George Carter, Royal Wiltshire Militia, 45yrs, and Mary, 28yrs, nee Tufnell. Mary had a younger brother, George, born in France in 1841. Her father died when she was very young and she lived with her mother and brother in Canterbury and then Dover until her marriage   to Thomas Holman, on 23rd July 1861.

Over the following 20 years the couple had 15 children, 3 died in infancy. They were residents of Eastbourne, Sussex, and after retiring from the army, Thomas became a well-known businessman in the town. It was a wealthy household, employing a footman, children's nurses and various domestic staff. Mary's mother lived with the family for the rest of her life, and they had all moved to Worthing, Sussex, by 1891, where they lived at 5, Heene Terrace, on the sea front.

On 24th January 1899, Thomas was admitted to the Holloway Sanatorium in Egham, Surrey, suffering from 'general paralysis of the insane'; he died there on 29th December 1899, aged 62yrs. Mary's mother died in 1907, aged 95yrs, and she moved to Broomfield, Broadwater Road, with her unmarried daughter, Muriel.

DEATH OF MRS. M. L. HOLMAN - WIDOW OF DEVONSHIRE PARK'S FIRST MANAGER

The death took place on Monday, at a Worthing nursing home of Mrs. Mary Louisa Holman, widow of Captain Thomas Holman, Royal Wiltshire Regiment, who was the first secretary and manager of Devonshire Park, Eastbourne. Mrs. Holman, who as well as her husband, will be remembered by many of the older residents of Eastbourne, was within a little more than three years of reaching her century, she being in her 97th year. Captain Holman, besides his appointment at Devonshire Park, was secretary of the Devonshire Club and also of Eastbourne College, and he was the first Returning Officer for the Borough in 1883, when Eastbourne was incorporated. Of the fifteen children born in Eastbourne, three died in infancy and the eldest (Captain Harry Holman) as the result of an accident in 1924. The other eleven children are all living.

Mrs. Holman’s mother, Mrs. George Carter, of Kennington Hall, Ashford, who was well known in the early days of Eastbourne, lived to the great age of 95.
