Life story

Mary Ann Horton was born in Dudley, spanning the borders of Staffordshire and Worcestershire, in 1848; her parents were Joseph, 37yrs, a Coachman, and Esther, 37yrs, she was 1 of 5 children.

At 13yrs of age, Mary Ann was in domestic service in Claines, Worcestershire.

On 20th April 1869, Mary married John Haines, a labourer, at Kings Pyon, Herefordshire, and they had 4 daughters, Alice b.1870, Amy b.1873, Agnes b. 1876, and Mabel b.1886, born with curvature of the spine.

In 1881, John was an agricultural labourer and waggoner, and the family lived in Sherbourne, Warwickshire, for many years, in 1901 they were living in Wellesbourne, Warwickshire.

By 1911 they had moved south to Worthing, Sussex, where John was a fruit grower and gardener, living in the Bungalow, Lansdowne Road. Mabel was the only daughter remaining at home, helping her father in the nursery, but in 1913 she died, aged 27yrs, from influenza and cardiac failure.

Mary Ann died, aged 68yrs, on 21st December 1916.
