Life story

Life story

Mary Delves was born in Sandbach, Cheshire, c1828. She was the daughter of George Delves, 27yrs, Silk Weaver, she had 3 siblings, Samuel, b.1831, Sarah, b.1833, and Martha, b.1835.

In 1841, Mary, aged 13yrs, was recorded as a silk weaver, like her father, probably working at home. No wife was listed on the census, so Mary was possibly looking after her 3 younger siblings. At the age of 22yrs, in 1851, Mary was employed as a school mistress in Macclesfield, another employee at the same institution, was Thomas Gee, 24yrs, a blacksmith and gas fitter, and in 1855 Mary married Thomas Gee, in Macclesfield, Cheshire, he later became Governor of the Reformatory School, Hardwicke, Gloucestershire, and she became the Matron. They had 7 children, Harriett b.1855, Frank b.1857, Thomas b.1862, Albert b.1865, Margaret b.1867, Harold b.1869, and Oswald b. 1871.

Mary died, aged 87yrs, on the 21st December 1915 at Worthing, Sussex, where her son, Oswald, was living in Northfield Road, Tarring. Her husband, Thomas, died in 1916, aged 91yrs, in Gloucestershire.
