Story
Mary Anne was born in Bethnal Green, daughter of Thomas and Mary Anne. Her father was an umbrella manufacturer. By 1865, the family had moved to Stratford in Essex closer to Thomas’s business in West Ham. Mary Anne was close to her siblings Frederick, Annie, Beatrice and Nellie and lived with them all her life. By 1891, Thomas had died and his son Frederick took over the business. The family moved to Wanstead and then to South Woodford. Mary Anne Snr died before 1911. By the start of World War I, Mary Anne and her siblings had moved to Worthing, living at “Seabank” in Manor Road until the end of the war. They then moved to 73 Marine Parade before finally settling at “Talybont”, 7 Shakespeare Road. The women took an active role in local life, supporting local charities and worshipping at Holy Trinity Church in Shelley Road. They also helped at the annual Heene Summer Fair. Mary Anne’s sister Annie was the first to die in 1927. Her brother Frederick died in 1942. The sisters moved to 24 Wordsworth Road, where Mary Anne died on 22 February 1953. No Probate. The surviving sisters Nellie and Beatrice continued to live in Wordsworth Road where Nellie died in 1955. Beatrice moved to “Ashmount” in Southey Road and died in 1957. The youngest sister Florence was the only one to marry. She moved to Shakespeare Road about 1945 and died in 1950. She is buried in Durrington Cemetery.
