Life story

Mary May was born in Hanwell, Middlesex, in 1849. Her father was Rev. John May, M.A., 55yrs, Chaplain of the County Asylum, Hanwell, Middlesex, her mother was Ellen, 34yrs, nee Locke. Mary had 2 older siblings, Ellen, 3yrs, John Edward Frances, 2yrs, and she later had 4 more siblings, Charles, 1850, Edith, 1853, Sidney, 1855, and Octavius, 1857. Mary, 26yrs, married Alfred de Denne, 33yrs, in Brentford on 19th October 1875. He was a Paymaster, R.N., and the son of the medical officer at Hanwell Asylum, where her own father was Chaplain. They had a daughter, Ethel Mary. Alfred and Mary retired to Worthing, living at 6, Shelley Road, in 1901. They later moved to St. Agnes, Manor Road, where Alfred died, aged 79yrs, on 4th February 1921. Mary continued to live at St. Agnes until she died, aged 83yrs, on 17th January 1932, at Caer Gwent, Wykeham Road, Worthing.
