Life story

Mary Elizabeth Bayly and Catherine Anne Bayly were twin daughters born to Robert and Mary Bayly, they were baptised on 9th June 1848 at St. James Church, Muswell Hill, Middlesex. Their father was a Barrister-in-Law of the Inner Temple. Mary Elizabeth was 12yrs in 1861 and lived with her twin sister and 3 other siblings, Robert B. 9yrs, Amy Agnes 7yrs, and Ada Ellen 4yrs. They lived at 5, Montpelier Villas, Brighton, they employed 4 servants, Cook, Nurse, Parlour-maid and Housemaid. Her father died in May 1868, effects under £25000 value 2020 - £2.8m. Mary lived with her widowed mother and siblings in 1871 at 3, Denmark Terrace, Brighton. She married Rev. John Henchman Crowfoot in 1872 and moved to Lincoln. Her twin sister married her husband's older brother, William, in 1874. Mary and John had 4 children; one daughter died shortly after birth. They continued to live in Lincoln and in 1913 John retired and they moved to Worthing. After the death of her husband in 1926, Mary Elizabeth returned to 9, Minster Yard, Lincoln, to be with her daughters. She died on 1st December 1927, aged 79yrs, she was buried in Heene Cemetery.
