Life story

Life story

Mary was born in Westleigh, Devon in 1841 where her father, Dashwood Lang, was Vicar. Her mother was Charlotte Lang. Mary continued to live at Westleigh until she married Sidney Higgs Craven at Barnstaple, Devon, in 1862. Curiously, although there were three children of the marriage by 1871 and the youngest being only 2 months old, Sidney was not with his wife and family in the Censuses of 1871 and 1881. In both of these years she was living with Lang relatives and described as a "Banker's wife". Meanwhile, Sidney was in London. However, Sidney and Mary were both included in the 1891 and 1901 Censuses in London. By 1911 they had moved to "West View", in Harrow Road, Worthing. This Census revealed that Sidney and his son, Arthur Nevill, a bank cashier, had both been born in Ceylon but were British by parentage.
