Mary was born in Uckfield, Sussex, the daughter of Luther and Mercy. Her father was a blacksmith. By 1861, the family were living in Buxted where Luther now a widower was farming 72 acres. As a young woman, Mary moved to Brighton where she worked as a housemaid in North Street. On 20th December 1891, Mary married Charles Cooper at Broadwater church, Worthing. Charles had recently returned from Army service in India and was working as a butler. The couple moved to Milton Street, Worthing. A daughter Mercy Elizabeth was born in 1892 but died in December 1893 and was buried at Heene. A second son Charles William was born in 1896. During the First World War, Charles joined up as a reservist but was discharged in 1918 as physically unfit on a pension of six shillings per week. Mary died at 21 Milton Street in February 1927. No probate.
