Mary was born to Thomas and Esther in 1870 in Pulborough Sussex. Her Father worked as a carter and the family lived at Norwood cottage, Pulborough, Sussex. She had 2 siblings Emily born 1866 Brighton and Flora born 1869 Brighton.

In 1901 the family were living at 5 Thorley Terrace, Milton Street Worthing Sussex. William's occupation was a bricklayer/builder. He put in several tenders for work around Worthing, including building a new brick wall for the new pumping station in 1896.
