Life story

Mary was born in Washington, the daughter of John and Mary. She was baptised in the village church on 31st October 1801. On 11th February 1823, Mary married William Charles at Lancing. William was an agricultural labourer. The couple settled in Lancing and had four children, David, William, Barbara and James. William died in 1855 and was buried in the local cemetery on 7th June. Mary took in lodgers to supplement her income as a charwoman. She lived for some years with Thomas Tidey, a widower and blacksmith. By 1881, Mary was living with her daughter and son-in-law in Heene Road on the corner of Shelley Road . She was assisted by a payment from the Parish Relief. Mary died in July 1886 and was buried on 28th August. No probate.
