Her father was Alexander Livingstone and her mother was Christina, née Thomson, also born in Chile, and British by parentage.

Mary was John’s second wife. They married in 1887 and they had no children. John had a daughter, Ethel Mima from his first marriage. Although Mary was born in Chile by the time she was 10 the family was in Greenock,  and she remained in Scotland after her marriage , not appearing in Worthing until the 1911 Census at 6 Belsize Road. She was widowed in 1918.

In 1921 she lived with her step-daughter, Ethel Mima, now married to William Robert Smith, a solicitor, in Harrow, Middlesex.

However, In the 1939 Register she was one of the many residents at  the luxurious Mora Soomaree Hotel at 64, Shelley Road, Worthing, run by Dorothy and George Ekins. At the hotel there were 2 lounges, sun lounge, hot and cold water, gas fires in all the bedrooms, slumberland mattresses and an excellent chef. She was still a resident there when she died, aged 83, on 3 April 1944. She left £2292 11s 8d to be administered by Roy Alexander Malcolm, solicitor.
