Life story

Life story

Mary's mother, Mary Grace Aron, died, aged 44,  when Mary Georgina was about a year old. Mary Grace had a second child, a son called Richard James, born on 4 June 1873.  Mary Grace died 6 days after his birth and Richard died on 10 August 1873. Both are buried at Ocklynge Cemetery, Eastbourne.

Mary Georgina did not marry but lived with her father, George, all his life . He had been born in Alsace, France, and was a private tutor. In 1881 their address was Brighton Road, Croydon, and they had one servant, Rhoda Lunn, who proved to be a particularly loyal friend who remained with Mary all her life. She progressed from servant to housekeeper and then to companion. They were still at the same address in 1891 but had moved to 19, Coombe Road, Croydon by 1901.

George died in 1892 and In 1911 Mary and Rhoda  were at Crohamhurst, Heene Road. When Mary died on 30 January 1919 she left £6849 16s 4d. Rhoda inherited the house and lived there for 24 years until she died at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester in 1945, aged 88.
