Life story

Martha Cumberland was born on 8th November 1841 in Islington London to John and Elizabeth Cumberland.  John Cumberland worked as a  Master Hosier.

Martha lived with her parents for a large portion of her life and in 1871 she was teaching, however by 1881 she had given the profession up. In 1901 she is living on her own and on her own income, she has a servant. By 1911 she has moved to Worthing and is living at 'Lucetta' Shakespeare Road, Worthing with her friend Eliza Gardiner.  Martha died on 19th February 1913 in Worthing and left an amount of £5466 13s 1d (approx. £322000 in 2020) with probate to Arthur George Cumberland and Mary Ann Cumberland
