Life story

Life story

Mark's father, Edward, was a farmer, employing 2 men on 60 acres. in Nuthurst, Sussex. Mark's mother was Emily. There were at least eight children. Some of the boys when into farming but not Mark. He became a draper and grocer in East Grinstead, Sussex, and prospered but had no children although he married twice. He married his first wife, Catherine Cucksey, in 1867. On 28th February 1891 a young girl, called Claribel Davey, took from Mark's shop a pair of gloves, 2 pairs of boots, 4 pairs of stockings and 2 corsets 'with intent to defraud'. She was described as a spoilt child and had got into bad company. As these were her first offences and she was very poor at the time and she had been in prison already eleven weeks awaiting trial the Court took a lenient view and bound her over to live an honest life in future. Catherine died in 1894 and Mark married Jenny Bailye at East Grinstead in March 1895. Mark retired to 'Kylemore' in Harrow Road, Worthing and he died there on 17 December 1907 leaving £4172 4s 11d to Jenny.
