Story
Marianne Elfrid, baptised at Broadwater on 9 November 1879, was the daughter of Edward Frederick Hemingway and Marianne Jane Hemingway, née Stockman. Edward was a Deputy Purveyor to the Forces. At the time of the 1881 Census, when they were living at ‘The Elms’, Heene, he was on ‘half pay’ which meant that he was not actually employed in supplying goods to the Army or the Navy at the time but could be called upon to do so in the future. When Marianne was 5 ½ years old she contracted tubercular meningitis and died on 26 April 1885 at Bepton, a village near Midhurst. Her father was present at her death. She was buried at Heene on 2 May.
