Life story

Life story

Marian was born in Golcar, Yorkshire, the daughter of Richard and Anne. She was baptised at St John the Evangelist church, Golcar on 19th September 1875. Her father was a woollen manufacturer. Anne died in September 1875 and Richard married again in 1880. His new wife was Mary Crosland, a teacher. Richard died on 12th October 1880. By 1891, Mary and the children had moved to Gomersal where Mary was a principal of a ladies school. After Mary's death, the family moved to Cleckheaton. In 1908, Marion married Surgeon Commander Leonard Sykes Whitwam in Hove. He was originally from Golcar. By 1911, Leonard was serving aboard HMS Encounter in the Pacific. Marion may have been with him in Tonga. In 1921, they were living in Kent but by 1926, they had moved to 71 Lansdowne Place in Hove. Marion died on 17th November 1929 at 7 Wilbury Road, Hove, a nursing home. She was buried with her sister Sarah Hannah Wood at Heene. Probate was granted on 24th February 1930 to Midland Bank Executor and Trustee Co Ltd. Effects £1719 9s 6d.

Leonard died in Paignton, Devon in 1949.
