Life story

Life story

Maria was born in Newington, Surrey, the daughter of Charles and Mary Ann. She was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Newington on 29th July 1842. Her father died in 1846. The family remained in Newington after Charles' death as his widow owned several properties.

As a young woman, Maria worked as a governess at a private school in Farnham, Surrey. After her mother's death on 3rd June 1881, Maria and her sister Mary Anna moved to Worthing, living at "Breinton" in St Botolph's Road.

Their sister Jane had died in 1887 not long after her husband Edmund Thomas, so their children went to live with the sisters for a while. One daughter, Emily stayed, working as a music teacher.

Maria's sister Mary died in 1914. Maria died on her birthday 10th July 1919. Probate was granted on 14th August to Mary Elizabeth Thomas and Jane Dorothy Thomas spinsters (nieces). Effects £4702 0s 4d.
