Margaret was born on 23rd January 1877 in West Tilbury Essex to the Reverend James Bonamy Dobree and Harriet Dobree (nee Moor). She was one of 8 children born to James and Harriet; however 4 of the children died before 1911
James Bonamy Dobree was the rector of West Tilbury Church, a position he held for 47 years and the family lived in the vicarage. After his death in 1918 a stained glass window was created in the church in his memory, which read:
In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. I was hungred and ye gave me meat, I was thirsty and ye gave me drink To the glory of god and to the memory of the Rev. James Bonamy Dobree MA was for forty seven years Rector of this parish and who died Oct 25th 1918. This window was erected by parishioners and friends.
He is buried in West Tilbury Churchyard. However the church was deconsecrated in 1979 and is now a private residence.
After the death of James, his Wife Harriet and two of her children, Doris and Margaret moved to Worthing where they lived in Downview Road Worthing, both Sisters remained spinsters.
Margaret and Doris were volunteers of the Red Cross VAD (Voluntary Aid detachment) from 1915 to 1918. Both were involved in nursing duties at the Rosherville and Ingress Abbey VAD Hospital Gravesend. Margaret worked part time serving 3318 hours in total.
Like her sister Doris, Margaret was involved in a lot of charitable work, organising fetes and fairs in Worthing.
