Life story

Life story

Margaret was born in Colyton, Devon, on 11 January 1878. Her parents were George Gordon West and Mary Ann ( nee Spiller) West. At eighteen, she married Howard Matthew Belchem, in 1904 in Wynberg, South Africa.

Her children were  Dorothy Comer born in 1905, Frederick Howard born in 1907, Peggie born in 1908, Edith born in 1913 and John born in 1914.

Howard, in the Northumberland Fusiliers,  died of wounds in Belgium in 1915, aged 36 having been shot by a sniper near Ypres and is commemorated on the Roll of Honour at Ardingly College.

Margaret lived at Kylemore, Harrow Road, Worthing and died in Worthing Hospital on 25 June 1922. She left £809 13s 6d to Edith Ruth Skinner and Owen King Belchem.
